L-tyrosine is a free-form amino acid that crosses the blood-brain barrier. It is a precursor of the motivational neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline, as well as thyroid hormones and enkephalins—important peptides that alleviate feelings of physical discomfort. L-tyrosine is also a component of amino sugars (glycosaminoglycans), which perform numerous biological functions.
