Nicotinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is involved in more than 50 metabolic reactions, most of which are enzymatic. Its biologically active forms — NAD+, NADH, NADP and NADPH — play an important role as catalysts in cellular energy production, the breakdown of proteins and fatty acids, the synthesis of fatty acids, and the formation of steroid hormones and red blood cells. Nicotinamide acts in the same way as niacin, without the characteristic «flush».
