Nicotinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is involved in more than 50 metabolic reactions, most of which are enzymatic. Its biologically active forms — NAD+, NADH, NADP and NADPH — play an important role as catalysts in the process of energy production in cells, in the breakdown of proteins and fatty acids, in the synthesis of fatty acids, and in the formation of steroid hormones and red blood cells. Nicotinamide works in the same way as niacin, without the characteristic «flush».
