Thyroid hormones regulate the metabolism of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, thereby influencing how these macronutrients contribute to energy production. A deficiency or excess of thyroid hormones can have far-reaching consequences. For example, high cortisol levels can affect thyroid function, leading to a decrease in thyroxine (T4) levels or insufficient conversion of T4 into its active form — triiodothyronine (T3). Each thyroid hormone performs many important functions in the body; for example, T4 supports cardiac output per minute, heart rate, respiratory rate, and basal metabolic rate – a low basal metabolic rate can cause fatigue, chills, and problems related to weight loss. Plant-derived thyroxine provides support for healthy thyroid function and its nourishment, the conversion of T4 to T3, as well as support for normal cortisol levels. This formula, which supports non-glandular thyroid function, is produced only by Thorne.
Thorne’s thyroxine formula contains key ingredients to support the thyroid, including iodine, which is necessary for the formation of T4, and L-tyrosine, which is an essential component in the formation of both T4 and T3. Results of animal studies have shown that the Ayurvedic botanical product ashwagandha can increase T4 concentration. Thyroxine also includes several nutritional cofactors necessary for the conversion of T4 to T3, including such minerals as selenium, zinc, and copper. Thyroxine includes vitamin B12, because a deficiency of this vitamin affects the activity of thyroid hormones. The conversion of T4 to T3 can be inhibited in cases of heavy metal intoxication and lipid peroxidation; therefore, it is considered reasonable to include the antioxidant vitamins C and E to balance such inhibition.
