Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is an organic compound related to glucose, and is one of the main nutrients in the human diet, necessary for the normal functioning of connective and bone tissue. It performs the biological functions of a reducing agent and a coenzyme in certain metabolic processes and is considered an antioxidant.
Effects of ascorbic acid
Formation of collagen, serotonin from tryptophan, formation of catecholamines, synthesis of corticosteroids. Ascorbic acid also participates in the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids. Vitamin C is necessary for detoxification in hepatocytes with the participation of cytochrome P450. It restores ubiquinone and vitamin E. It stimulates the synthesis of interferon and therefore is involved in immunomodulation. It converts divalent iron into trivalent iron, thereby promoting its absorption.
It inhibits glycosylation of hemoglobin and inhibits the conversion of glucose to sorbitol. Vitamin C is the strongest antioxidant – it protects lipoproteins from oxidation and is an anti-atherogenic molecule.
According to the results of a 2014 study published in the journal «Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology», the use of vitamin C helps reduce the severity of bronchospasm and respiratory symptoms (cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, dyspnea) induced by physical exercise. Exercise-induced bronchospasm is understood as transient narrowing of the bronchial lumen that occurs during or after physical activity.
Ascorbic acid in bodybuilding
The absorption of dietary protein and the subsequent synthesis of new protein structures, particularly in muscles, depends precisely on vitamin C. Vitamin C is the strongest stimulator of muscle anabolism. Nevertheless, it should be taken in bodybuilding wisely and without exceeding the dose.
In addition, studies have shown that ascorbic acid has an anti-catabolic effect by inhibiting the secretion of cortisol and the process of lipid peroxidation that destroys muscles. Therefore, vitamin C can be taken before training to reduce catabolic processes and protect muscles, as well as after completing a cycle of anabolic steroids, as a component of PCT. Some authors report an ability to increase testosterone production; however, this is refuted by other studies.

Dosage and administration
The physiological requirement for adults is 90 mg per day; for bodybuilding, 100–150 mg per day. In cases of colds, as well as after a course of anabolic steroids to block cortisol, the dose is increased to 1000–2000 mg per day. The maximum dose is 3000 mg.
